About Istanbul

Quotation from Napoleon Bonaparte;

"If the Earth was a single state, Istanbul would be its capital."

Istanbul is the biggest city of Turkey and one of the 3 biggest metropolises of Europe with more than 11 millions inhabitants. The city covers 25 districts of the Istanbul province. Just by looking these numbers about the city, we call Istanbul even as a “country”. Although the present capital is Ankara, Istanbul can be seen as the cultural and financial capital of Turkey.

Istanbul is located on the Bosphorus Strait, and encompasses the natural harbor known as the Golden Horn, in the northwest of the country. It extends both on the European (Thrace) and on the Asian (Anatolia) side of the Bosphorus, and is thereby the only metropolis in the world which is situated on two continents. The city has also been nicknamed "The City on Seven Hills" because the historic peninsula, the oldest part of the city, was built on seven hills.

In its 3000 years long history, Istanbul served as the capital city of the Roman Empire (330-395), the Byzantine Empire (395-1204 and 1261-1453), the Latin Empire (1204-1261), and the Ottoman Empire (1453-1922). The city was chosen as joint European Capital of Culture for 2010.

Probably now you are wondering;

· How is the life in a city sited on two different continents?

· How can it be possible that nearly 2 millions people are making intercontinental trips everyday in a few minutes?

· How much could a city like Istanbul offer in terms of history, culture and fun?

No worries, you will learn it soon when you arrive, if you did already come on and text some comments.
